It’s February. The stores are all decked in red and pink, chocolate and wine, which can only mean one thing.
It’s time for the motel to recommend a tragic romance!
My love for tragic romance is nothing new on this blog, as seen by this post here. There’s something so captivating and incredibly heart-wrenching about a couple that can’t be together. Not because they don’t want to. It’s simply because they can’t. Be it society, illness, or in this case…time and space. Literally.
Somewhere in Time (1980) tells the story of Richard Collier, played by Christopher Reeves, essentially going back in time to meet Jane Seymour’s Elise McKenna. It is implied, in my opinion, that they’ve met and loved before.
I have to tell you guys that I am a sucker for love through time and space. There is always a compulsion of sorts, a magnetic pull from the characters that can only be defined through longing stares. The motel loves a good longing stare.

Though Reeve’s character, Richard, can be borderline stalker-like in this movie, as he quite literally grows obsessed with a mere painting of Elise at the hotel he’s staying at, perhaps that is part of the movie’s charm. Because back in the day, women were supposed to allow themselves to be pursued, even if it is through time travel. Of course, this act is completely biased due to the fact that this character is played by Christopher Reeves. If it was anybody else…I’m personally not sure if it would’ve had the same magical, serendipitious, romantic effect!
Do you have a favorite tragic romance?
