TV: The Way We Were (1973)

I woke up this morning thinking about the way Barbara Streisand and Robert Redford looked at each other in The Way We Were. Not only that, but every once in a while I find myself pondering about this film, and the differences their characters endured that, despite their love for each other, resulted in their ending.

It’s a unique love story to tell. The characters in this movie are anchored to the tumultuous political notions of the time. Their beliefs, their lifestyle, and their personalities seemed like opposing magnets that were somehow attracted to each other.

Despite their obvious differences, which are intelligently made apparent in the film, the earnest way these two tried their best to make it work, is what moves audience’s hearts to this day.

I love this shot of these two together. Their chemistry seemed unlikely, but perhaps that is what made it incredible.

I must confess, I first heard of this film through the infamous Sex and the City scene where the girls talk about Big being Carrie’s “Hubble.” Through sheer curiosity, I looked up the film, and ended up stumbling upon a classic.

This has also been kept a secret for a while, because I don’t see it as particularly relevant to the theme of this blog, but my favorite TV show has to be Psych. I’ve re-watched this show more times than I could count and that says a lot because I don’t watch many full-length TV shows to begin with, much less more than once! The show combines two of my favorite things: mystery + humor. So what wasn’t to like?

Anyway, there’s this scene where Henry asks Shawn to brings things back to the way they were and Shawn’s response was: “What does Barbara Streisand have anything to do with this?”

I can’t help but laugh uncontrollably whenever I watch that scene.
