I think if Valentine’s Day didn’t have the connotation of annoying couples, advertised as a day specifically for couples, it could actually be quite enjoyable. It’s a day celebrating the act of love itself, be it with others or simply yourself, attached or not.
But for a romantic such as myself, I’d say V-Day is also the perfect excuse to rewatch some of my favorite romance movies! Luckily, the motel is here to help. Today’s special focus will be on historical romances. There’s just something about the circumstances of olden times, the dangers, and the fact that you may or may not ever see them again but somehow you do because it’s fate.

The Princess Bride (1987)
A classic that is actually quite the general crowd pleaser. People can’t help but love this movie. It honestly has everything: action, romance, and comedy? A true recipe for success and rightfully so. Inconceivable!

Far and Away (1992)
I’d kind of written about this movie before very early on in the blog and to be honest didn’t quite do it justice. So here it is.
This is honestly one of Cruise’s most underrated work. I think he’d established himself so well in action that people forget he’s amazing at drama and romance, too!
Because Cruise is so charismatic himself, I usually find it difficult for him to properly find someone to star opposite of him. And a lot of the time, real life couples acting with each other in a movie don’t cut it for me. In fact, a lot of the time, the best onscreen couples are the actors who are best friends in real life, not couples.
But Nicole Kidman pretty much is the exception to everything I’d just said. She’s always given Cruise a run for his money, and I recall it was actually one of the things he’d loved about her. The two have surprisingly amazing chemistry, if you just ignore the poor Irish accents.

Romeo and Juliet (2013)
As a young teenager who didn’t know much about film or literature, this actually used to be my favorite adaptation of the play. I think it’s because at the time, the two lead actors were people I knew. I also found the sets and costumes quite pretty. Of course now, the 1968 version is pretty much king, but every once in a while it’s fun to mix things up. I’d still happily watch this version and to be honest I don’t think it’s as bad as people make it seem.
I’ve realized I’ve written a lot about romance on this blog. Can I help it if I’m a modern romantic? So here are some other related posts that might of be of interest on this special day:
