TV: A Complete Unknown (2024)

Good biopics are often difficult to properly execute.

It’s usually about a famous person in history and for whatever reason the actor never quite actually looks like them, no matter the hair and makeup, and no matter how good of an actor they may be. Little things bug me, like how the real person had blue eyes and the actor playing him has brown eyes – a detail the director seemingly chose to ignore. Or the height difference between the real person and his wife. Or how the real person had a sense of class and elegance that the actress just flat out does not share. Likewise, the actor just doesn’t have the sense of performance and charisma that the real person was famous for.

It’s the caveat of playing such a famous real life person – there’s little wiggle room in terms of interpretation.

But this one blew me away.

Similar to my Challengers post, it’s just one of those movies that blow you away in every single way (Blowin’ in the Wind, anyone?). Performance, style, picture, dialogue, and the overall execution just flows so seamlessly and nothing is out of place.

It’s also no secret that Timothee Chalamet is an exceptional actor. His performance and dedication to the role was beyond anything even expected. Like Saoirse Ronan said in a recent interview, watching him in this movie didn’t feel like an actor playing Bob Dylan. It felt like watching a real character find himself.

An amazing director and supporting cast add to the greatness of this movie. It’s something you can watch without even really knowing much about Bob Dylan other than the fact that he’s a famous singer.

That, I think, is the ultimate feat.
