TV: the motel’s favorite Barbie movie

A guy once told me: “Friendships between girls are more complicated because women tend to change more throughout their lives.” He then went on to tell me that he’s had the same group of guy friends since kindergarten, and to be honest, a lot of my other male friends seemed to have the same pattern.

As much as I wanted to disagree, I couldn’t help but think that he was somewhat right.

Female friendships are indeed, more complicated. I think it’s easy for girls to make friends. All it can really take is a compliment, fake one or not. But to have a long, withstanding female friendship without jealousy, bitchiness, and drama, well…that’s another challenge that I believe women are still trying to overcome. If you would like to know more about the trails and turbulations of female friendships, this video has some good insight on the subject.

Though, I am proud to say that I do have one friend, one that I’ve known since the 6th grade. We’ve actually known of each other before that, as far as elementary school, but were never put in the same class until that 6th grade year.

I also mentioned her in this post, and in our true fashion, we went to go see the new Barbie movie together. The last time I saw her, she’d asked me, “What’s your favorite Barbie movie?” And now here is my answer.

In honor of the new Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and directed by Greta Gerwig, here is the motel’s favorite Barbie movie: Barbie as Rapunzel.

I am also a bit biased because this was the first Barbie movie I ever watched as a little girl. I was so enamored by the medieval setting the older Barbie movies are so well known for, full of castles, dragons, knights, villages, spells, magic, and sparkle. Funny enough, this was probably one of the first exposure I had as a kid to medieval times, and I still love it to this day. Someone please bring these things back!

If you’ve watched the movie, you must know of that dress making scene, and damn someone give Arnie Roth an award because the scores he worked on for these Barbie movies hit way harder than the production value should’ve let him!

This is still the best dress scene I’ve ever seen in movie history, fight me on this! No dress compares to this one.

Words can’t quite describe how special Barbie is to me. I grew up with her, and her movies have influenced me more than she will ever know.

People love to hate on Barbie. And after watching the new movie, I will say it’s not what I expected. Not in a bad way. It’s a far cry from the animated movies, that’s for certain, but I believe it’s a message that many people need to hear and so, Barbie proves herself once again that anything is possible. Though she has had a bad reputation over the years, I think people forget the values and principles she preaches are actually pretty damn empowering. If people look deeper into her character, they would discover that she’s more than her image. And really, isn’t that what a good character is all about?

Honorable Mentions

  • Barbie in the Nutcracker
  • Barbie of Swan Lake
  • Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper
  • Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus
  • The Barbie Diaries
  • Barbie and the Twelve Dancing Princesses

Clearly, my personal favorites reflect the times. I didn’t pay much attention to the movies after a certain point because the animation and trajectory pretty much changed. These will always hold a very special place in my heart, and I will always be thankful that such movies exist.

P.S. Yes, we wore pink gingham to go watch the new Barbie movie. And it was so interesting to see so many other people dress up just for the heck of it. Amazing, isn’t it?
