Whenever it rains, I think of Seattle. Then, I think of the movie Sleepless in Seattle.
Nora Ephron’s work had crept up on me. I don’t know how I suddenly made it through all the Meg Ryan movies, though if I were to think a little hard about it, I believe it might’ve been back when La La Land was released.
I like to boast that I’d watched La La Land without quite a care about the reviews, not knowing that it’d become the acclaimed film that it is today. Instead, I’d watched it because I loved Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone together. I knew they were good actors, and I knew their chemistry was top-notch after watching Crazy, Stupid, Love years before. When you have two actors starring in a movie with that kind of storyline and production, you know you have to go see it. Not because of the reviews, people! That is the motel philosophy and film-watching mindset.
An article on La La Land had compared Ryan and Emma to classic Hollywood pairings, one of which included Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
Of course, I grew intrigued, and the rest is history.
Sleepless in Seattle might be a bit slow and sleepy to some, but that might be the point of it. It is not your typical romance (the two main leads don’t even meet until the end of the movie) but it’s so elegantly written and paced. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan really work their magic here, despite being across the country from each other. It’s funny because it’s not like the two have this kind of passionate, oozing romantic chemistry. Theirs is more along the lines of eye contact and smiles. It’s interesting, really. Now that’s good acting and writing!
Celine Dion and Clive Griffin also lend their wonderful voices in a rendition of When I Fall in Love for the movie, which is the cherry on top for me.

Nora Ephron was one of her kind. She made the romantic comedy genre intelligent, witty, sophisticated, and elegant. No one quite makes movies like the way she did anymore.
They can try to copy them, but to no avail. Nora Ephron had her own unique take on things that made her movies mundane, yet intriguing and utterly sensational. The motel is a big fan of her movies and her work! I’ve been meaning to take a read at her books. Maybe that will be a future goal in the new year.
