It’s about time we talk about Hitchcock.
I have a friend who is an avid lover of vintage items and antiques. He has taught me many incredible things about thrifting and turning something ordinary into something beautiful. A connoisseur on menswear, he loves a good striped bowtie, well constructed lapels, and fine button detailing.
Though, he gave me one caveat.
“I haven’t really watched any old movies,” he said.
I was appalled. “What kind of vintage lover are you?” I asked in disbelief.
He laughed. “Yeah I like old things, but when they’re made new.”
Interesting, I thought. Though I suppose there was some charm to modern, HD, well-built, vintage-inspired items. The actors are still alive, the wardrobe a bit more accessible, and the content easier to find.
I remember when I first started watching old movies, it took a bit of time for me to get used to it. Old movies are slower than what we’re used to, the plots not as predictable. The language and lingo can be strange. The model and format were developed in a time we’re obviously not used to. As such, old movies can be sort of an acquired taste.
Sometimes I’m asked for old movie recommendations. If they don’t care much about Old Hollywood stars like Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and Cary Grant, the choices could be overwhelming. Where does one start?
I always say the Hitchcock films. Any one would do. None of them ever quite disappoint. The starring leads are often actors of notable character and history. Moreover, Hitchcock’s cinematography, choice of music, not to mention his pension for thriller, mystery, and suspense, make it a perfect choice for those who are not yet well attuned to older film.

Today’s Hitchcock pick is perfect for the summer season. To Catch a Thief famously stars Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, along with a gorgeous French Riviera backdrop. This film is not as serious or psychological as, say, Psycho, but is perfect for an elegant summer evening. Pair the night with a bottle of wine, seafood, and stripes.
I’ve also briefly seen on the internet that Hollywood wants to remake this and have Gal Gadot star in it. As much as I respect Gal Gadot as an actress, she is no Grace Kelly and this movies can never be remade with justice! Oh when will the remakes end?
