TV: a summer in July on the Amalfi Coast

Or at least, a girl could dream.

Though the motel had already posted three classic summer movies to watch, why not do one better and post three more?

The previous post was a bit All-American, to say the least. Now, we will take a journey across the Atlantic. To destinations that evoke images of white linen, seersucker print, and boat shoes.

Purple Noon

Starring none other than Alain Delon, Purple Noon is the original French take on the classic story of The Talented Mr. Ripley. Delon’s performance is ultra charismatic and deliciously captivating. Your eyes can’t help but be drawn to him during the entire film, which boasts gorgeous scenery, classic ensembles, and a thrilling murderous plot to boot.

The Talented Mr. Ripley

Likewise, the American take on the story is a must-see for guests at the motel who want to take a different approach on the scenery. Tom Ripley is played by Matt Damon, who in contrast to Alain Delon, is a bit clunkier. Nerdier. Not as smooth. But that is the beauty of it. Damon’s unalarming exterior plays well into his manipulative ways, bringing a different dynamic to the film compared to Delon’s Purple Noon.

The outfits presented here are also worth copying, be it in actual Europe, or simply at the community pool. These are truly looks that never quite go out of style.

La Piscine

Speaking of the pool, we change our scenery to a swimming pool by a French villa. Another Delon film to finish off this list, do not let the fun, whimsical setting fool you. This is a psychological thriller in disguise, which is what perhaps makes these older French films so enticing. The movie stars Delon’s ex-lover Romy Schneider and 60’s fashion icon Jane Birkin in her early 20’s.

Though it’s July, overcast, gloomy skies still seem to be the norm where the motel is. Strange weather we’re having here.
