BOOKS: a fun, comedic read

Does anyone appreciate comedy anymore?

As a Zillenial, I like to think that I grew up on comedy. Sitcoms were still pretty big in the early 2000s, and every other Disney Channel show had a laugh track embedded into their program someway, somehow. I was raised by the romantic comedies of the time, and wouldn’t dream of consuming content that didn’t make me smile or laugh. Which is probably why as I a kid, I definitely avoided Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

Nowadays, it seems like every number one Netflix blockbuster is a thriller, something serious and mind boggling. A prime example would be this past year’s Squid Game release, which had audiences at the edge of their seats. It’s the modern day adrenaline addiction and with it, comes increased revenue. So yes, it’s a smart marketing tactic on Netflix’s part, whether we like it or not!

Though, I find the classic comedy to be a desolate genre these days amongst streaming sites and modern releases. This is perhaps why young people still turn to The Office for a good dose of laughter. Netflix tries their best with their own releases but nothing seems to measure up. The closest comedic modern release on Netflix that the motel would recommend is Never Have I Ever, which is coincidentally also created by today’s author recommendation: Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?

Kaling is truly one of the best comedic geniuses of our time. She manages to combine sound intellect and humor into a signature style that is entirely her own. This book details her life and success journey to some extent, sprinkled with hilarious rambles and genuine opinions on various things in life, from peaking in high school, to which member of NSYNC would be the obvious favorite choice (Hint: It’s not JT).

So if you’re in the mood for something both funny and intellectual, this book is it. I still grab it from my shelf from time to time, and it’s always like I’m reconnecting with an old friend. Aren’t those kinds of books the best kind? I like to think so.

P.S. Never Have I Ever is actually a fantastic show, I swear I am the absolute worst at finishing shows, much less re-watching them, but I’ve re-watched NHIE so many times, I’ve seriously lost count. Perhaps a future post on this show in the future. Stay tuned!
