This show is perhaps the best thing that has been on TV for a long, long time.
Then again, I am completely biased.
As the guests know, the motel rarely ever watches, much less writes about a movie or TV show that is currently airing, or has recently aired. Normal People was the rare exception. So if it’s featured then damn, it must be good!
Only Murders in the Building star Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. I partially watched it for Gomez, I must admit, but ended up enjoying Martin and Short so damn much. The three balance each other out so unexpectedly well, and the generation gap is actually such a refreshing twist. There’s a scene where Martin’s character asks Short if he should text Gomez and Short replies, “Calls bother them for some reason.” “Text it is!” Martin enthusiastically decides. I really felt that and to be honest, haven’t seen much of that in a lot of modern TV shows. Much of the shows on Netflix star unknown actors, then fade away. It was such a joy to see Gomez, from my Zillenial generation, work with Martin and Short to creatively navigate the differences between them, and turn it into something beautiful.
Now the motel loves anything that involves a mystery + comedy concoction, and both are executed spectacularly in this show. Martin and Short have not lost their touch with comedy at all and I can’t help but laugh at every scene they’re in together. The writers, as Martin has said, have done a fantastic job and this show definitely deserves all the press it’s been getting!
If you want a good laugh with touches of mystery, intelligence, a dose of great New York hotel landscapes, and smart fashion choices, then you better watch this show. Perfect for the cozy season!
So Normal People and now Only Murders in the Building. Perhaps Hulu is on a roll.
